GDPR

concept · part of Responsible AI

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a comprehensive data protection and privacy regulation in the European Union, effective since May 2018. It governs the processing of personal data of individuals within the EU, emphasizing transparency, consent, and individual rights such as access, rectification, and erasure. GDPR matters because it sets a global standard for data privacy, imposing strict obligations on organizations, including hefty fines for non-compliance. It is used by any entity handling EU residents' data, regardless of location, and applies to both data controllers and processors. As a child of Responsible AI, GDPR ensures AI systems respect privacy and data rights, aligning with ethical AI principles. It relates to CCPA as a similar regulation in California, but GDPR is broader in scope and stricter in enforcement, while both share goals of data protection and user control.
