Data Subject Rights
concept · part of GDPR
Data Subject Rights are legal entitlements granted to individuals under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), empowering them to control their personal data. These rights include the right to access, rectification, erasure (right to be forgotten), restriction of processing, data portability, objection, and automated decision-making. They work by requiring data controllers to respond to requests within specified timeframes, ensuring transparency and accountability. These rights matter because they give individuals agency over their data, fostering trust and compliance. They are used whenever personal data is processed, such as in online services, employment, or healthcare. As a subset of GDPR, Data Subject Rights operationalize the regulation's core principles of fairness and lawfulness, directly enforcing individual privacy protections.
